As this is the first time I have actually seen this movie it was a
a lot of fun to watch, well put together and there's sure as a hell
a lot of worse ways to spend an hour and a half, well okay, longer
than that if you listen to the commentaries as well.
Its a snapshot
of fandom and the hysteria surrounding the release of The Phantom
Menace, in which fans waited excitedly for its release and others
tried to cash in on the hype of the then new movie. It's a snapshot
of a more innocent time (who would have thought 1999 would be referred
to as a more innocent time?)
How you view
this will depend entirely on your point of view. Non fans will simply
label everyone interviewed as geeks with no life but if you're a
fan you'll recognise yourself in some of the less extreme examples
presented, hell, you might even recognise yourself in some of the
extreme examples presented.
Tariq Jalil,
the director, presents us with a fair smattering of pov and you
either smile or cringe at some of the things said and also, fans
being fans, they're only too happy to demonstrate little things
like how to lift a car in a parking lot.
I suppose its
just me, but if someone with a camera says do something like that
and I'd tell 'em where to stick that camera, that's just not my
type of thing. I'm just to cynical and aware of how things can be
misrepresented or misunderstood.
But the documentary
shows us, that fandom is not so much of what we're fans of but more
of ourselves. Leading us to ask the question `why are we fans of...anything?`
This anniversary
reissue comes with deleted scenes, a new commentary and new interviews...the
commentaries being particularly enjoyable.
